DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual citywide Slow Art Day on Route 66 on Saturday\, April 11\, 2026 is an inclusive\, accessible art education and art appreciation event for all ages\, rain or shine. In the twin cities and nearby Lexington\, many local arts organizations will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To conclude the festivities\, all Slow Art Day goers are invited to a closing reception with sips and bites from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Herb Eaton Studio and Gallery\, 411 N. Center Street in Downtown Bloomington.\nSlow Art Day festivities will take place at museums\, galleries\, studios\, sculpture parks\, and other cultural sites across all seven continents. With a simple mission\, Slow Art Day aims to help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.\nThere’s something for everyone to enjoy on Slow Art Day. Participants may choose to work from live flowers or reference photos. The focus is on generous painting time\, individualized feedback\, and instructor demonstrations tailored to the needs and interests of the group. \nAttendees will leave with a handout of the topics discussed in class and a deeper understanding of how to capture the beauty of flowers in their paintings! \nBring your own supplies or add the optional materials fees when registering to have pastels and/or painting surfaces provided. \nGloves In a Bottle\, nitrile gloves\, paper towels\, and tabletop easels will be provided. \nMaterials List: \n\nAssorted soft pastels with a nice range of values — you may bring your own or add the Materials Fee for Pastels when you register.\n8″ x 10″ or larger pastel surface of your choice for your painting. Through live demonstrations and personalized instruction\, students will explore how to create various fur textures\, how to select colors for an animal’s coat\, and important considerations for bringing a portrait to life. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nDiscussion of how to create a meaningful portrait and how to choose and edit strong reference photos\nDemonstrations of pastel techniques for creating various fur textures\nExploration of colors found in animal coats\nDemonstrations and exercises for painting animal eyes\nIndividualized guidance tailored to each student’s style and goals\n\nBring your own supplies or add the optional materials fees when registering to have pastels and/or painting surfaces provided. \nGloves In a Bottle\, nitrile gloves\, paper towels\, and tabletop easels will be provided. \nMaterials List: \n\nAssorted soft pastels with a nice range of values — you may bring your own or add the Materials Fee for Pastels when you register.\nPastel pencils – these will be used primarily for animal eyes\, so consider the colors you would like for that\nA soft silicone taper brush like the one in this set\n8″ x 10″ or larger pastel surface of your choice for your painting plus additional smaller pieces for studies.
