Understanding Underpainting Workshop (9/25)

Class Description:
I frequently use a wet wash underpainting in my work and am often asked how I decide what colors to use for this initial layer. In this workshop, we will look at several example paintings and discuss how the color choices for the underpainting affect the finished piece. I will do a demo of the same scene with different colors for the underpainting so attendees can see first hand how these various choices can impact the feel of a painting. Participants will then put the concepts to use in their own painting utilizing their reference photos.
Materials:
Assorted soft pastels with a nice range of values — you may bring your own or add the Materials Fee for Pastels when you register.
White or Off-white pastel BOARD that can accept a wet wash — you will need one 8″ x 10″ (or larger) piece. UArt, PastelMat, Art Spectrum Colourfix, and Pastel Premier are all available in boards and can accept a wet wash. Blick Art Materials, Dakota Pastels, and ProArtPanels.com are all good resources to check. If you would like a UArt Board provided, please add the appropriate Materials Fee when you register.
Please bring your own backing board large enough to hold your 8″ x 10″ surface. A drawing board or piece of foam core will work.
Please bring your own reference photos for your painting.
Gloves In a Bottle, nitrile gloves, paper towels, and tabletop easels will be provided.
Other Info to Know:
- Feel free to bring snacks and drinks and take break times as needed. You can bring a sack lunch or purchase something from a nearby restaurant if you wish.
- I will not be able to offer refunds in the event you miss class.
